The book provides solid basics on safety, equipment to use (and to avoid), as well as good techniques. On the other hand, it is recommended the "soaper" purchase 2 scales for different measurements. I wondered why (the My Weigh KD-7000 handles all different types - gms, kgs, ozs, lbs) ... then started reading the "recipes". Talk about confusion!! In one recipe - the FIRST one, in fact, there are 3 weight types used - lbs, ozs, and gms. Tsps is thrown in just to make your eyeballs spin (usually that is a volume measure, rather than a weight measure. When it is THAT small, I don't worry about it, unless it is feathers vs rocks). Mixing types of weight measures is not only confusing on paper, but can easily lead to mistakes in weighing and measuring ingredients. If I make ANY of these recipes, I will convert ALL measurements to the SAME weight reference for consistency and accuracy.Other than that, so far, there are some helpful ideas and points in the book. Chapter 8 - "Diagnosing Signs of Trouble" has quite an extensive list of reasons/what to do for troubleshooting issues during the soapmaking process. There is also a list of Soapmaking Characteristics in relation to processing temperatures which explains a lot about how and why soap acts the way it does at various temperatures and what you can do (or not do!!) at those temperatures.Sure, there are no color pictures or fancy graphics, but this DOES have a lot of good, basic information in one place as a reference. Just double check your measurements before making one of the recipes. Then check them again. Remember, weigh twice, pour (or cut) once (with fabric it's measure twice, cut once, hah!).
