I'm a physician. Dave Asprey has clearly spent years and lots of money injecting himself with and subjecting himself to many, many chemicals and treatments (some were illegal, FYI, e.g. buying prescription drugs from Europe without a prescription).He is an entrepreneur and stands to make money by selling the supplements that his company markets. I suspect he knows darn well he's not going to "live to at least 180 years old" as he keeps saying. It's a marketing schtick for suckers. Dave looks about 5 years older than he actually is, so whatever he spent the $1M on, it worked only on the inside.A typical Dave Asprey story goes like this:-hiking in Nepal with aching knees, he tried some organic yak butter and "immediately felt amazing" which "proved" to him the immense power of grass-fed yak butter.-sitting in a neurofeedback center, an autistic kid screamed at him. Weeks later, that same kid was calmer. This "proved" to him the immense power of neurofeedback.-trying [piracetam, modafinil, L-theanine, injectible epithalon, or whatever] he immediately felt amazing, which "proved" to him the immense power of [insert marketable supplement, many of which he sells].He's appeared on the Dr. Oz Show. Dr. Oz is a well-known charlatan whom Columbia University alumni like myself have sought in vain to have removed from the faculty.I found it hilariously hypocritical that Asprey recommends such dangerous things as shooting a laser through his skull (which caused him to be unable to speak for 30 mins), but cautions that folks under 25 shouldn't take modafinil (Provigil) because there "isn't enough science on it yet." There isn't enough science on about 95% of what Dave Asprey recommends, so why pick on modafinil when he's recommending He Shou Wu tea to regrow and darken hair without noting that it can cause liver damage?Asprey talks about "low dopamine in the brain" without specifying which pathway he's talking about, as if low dopamine in the prefrontal cortex (ADHD) and in the substantia nigra (Parkinson's) are one and the same. In short, Dave Asprey just doesn't know nearly enough about what he pitches. Sadly, some listeners will not be able to discern for themselves the extent of his quackery. He's going to get someone hurt.It looks like he was right about avoiding black pepper because it inhibits CYP3D4, though. Thanks, Dave.
